PS3 On Track to Outsell Xbox 360 Worldwide in 2009The numbers are looking good...By Dustin Rudzinski - October 23, 2009 |

Since the launch of the PS3 Slim, sales of Sony's system have skyrocketed. They moved over a million units in a matter of weeks, closing the install base gap between PS3 and Xbox 360 by nearly a million units. PS3 has also achieved a feat many thought would never happen. It is now outselling the 360 in 2 of the 3 territories, and is within a few hundred thousand units of outselling 360 in the American territories. Sales for PS3 have been exceeding those of the Xbox 360 by between 70,000 units to 120,000 units for the past 3 weeks, and the gap between the systems was even greater in the previous weeks that followed the price cut and release of the PS3 Slim. Being that PS3 is already ahead of Xbox 360 in 2009 sales for 2/3 of the world (Japan and European territories), what will it take for Sony to pass up Microsoft in America as well? Well, the gap is currently at about 548,000 consoles sold this year (since January 4). If Sony is outselling at between 70k and 120k units per week, it would take PS3 about 8 weeks to outsell Xbox 360 in 2009 even if we used the lowest of those numbers (70,000 per week in favor of PS3). As long as Sony can keep the pace up, which all indications point at them doing just that (in fact, the sales gap between PS3 and 360 has increased in recent weeks in favor of PS3), PS3 will be outselling the Xbox 360 worldwide for 2009 by the end of this year. |
